Disease Development Process
Disease of every living being, including man of course,
represents the final result in the chain of connected events. The process of
disease development is initiated by etiologic factors. They can be genetic
(different genotype variations, congenital metabolic defects, chromosome
aberrations, sex, age, etc.), or environmental factors (chemical, physical,
biological, atmospheric, etc.).
Every disease is a dynamic process, and that is why we say that some event X,
for example process-conflict, man-environment, with some etiologic factor,
precedes a newly developed event (disease) Y. More clearly, event X is an
etiologic factor that determines event Y. Considering events in this manner, we
can classify etiologic factors as: necessary, sufficient and contributive.
Risk factor X is sufficient if it always results in the event (disease).
However, it does not mean that the disease Y is always preceded by factor X.
Increased value of nor-adrenaline leads to hypertension, however, hypertension
need not always be preceded by the increased value of nor-adrenaline.
Biologic environment is an endless source of etiologic causes of cardio-vascular
diseases (biologic, chemical, physical, atmospheric, etc.), but we should point
out that socio-economic environment (employment, education, living standard,
etc.), also plays an important role in the development of hypertension disease,
and consequently, in the generation process of atherosclerosis.
In the book "The New Encyclopedia Britannica", Ravtez says: "We must not forget
that the extension and improvement of living conditions in the 19th century
happened mostly due to the use of soap and sewage system, and less due to the
medical science".
What was done in the 20th century to beat atherosclerosis?
Numerous discoveries in the field of molecular biology have greatly contributed
to realistic and professional approach to the treatment of the increased blood
pressure, and/or professional treating or removing of risk factors, as well as
prevention, slowing down or treating the atherosclerosis process.
Foundations of basic discoveries in the field of molecular biology in our
country were established by our academician, Dusan T. Kanazir.
